Democratic Candidate Calls Bono Mack Vote Against Fair Pay for Women “Shameful”

PALM DESERT, CA, July 31, 2008 -- Democratic Congressional candidate Julie Bornstein called Mary Bono Mack's vote today in the House against fair pay for women "shameful, but unfortunately not a surprise."

"Representative Mack continues to vote against working families in California's 45th District.  Her vote today against the Paycheck Fairness Act is another demonstration that she is out of touch with the people she is sworn to represent," Bornstein said.

Mack voted with almost every other Republican against HR 1338, which would have strengthened remedies against unequal pay for women.  The bill nevertheless passed 247-178.

In May, Mack also voted along party lines against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act, which would have corrected a Supreme Court decision making it nearly impossible for working women to receive back pay for discrimination.  That bill also passed the House, but was stalled by Republicans in the Senate.

"On this issue of fairness for working women and their families, on high gas and food prices, and on the worst housing crisis in decades, the people of Riverside County want and deserve a change from Rep. Mack's status quo," Bornstein said.  "In November, they will get that change."
